How Rainbow Cuisine was born
South Africa offers food lovers one of the world’s most delicious and exciting cuisines. This rich culinary heritage dates back to the 17th Century with the arrival of the Dutch, who built a refreshment station at the Cape for their ships on the spice route to the East.
Here they found the indigenous Khoisan people who were herders, hunters and gatherers and the Strandlopers who lived off the harvest of the sea. The settlers also introduced slaves from East Africa and the East Indies, including Malaysia and Indonesia, who brought with them strong tradition of spices and cooking methods.
This wonderful mélange of African, European and Asian influences resulted in a unique and varied cuisine – a true Rainbow Cuisine.
